Citizens who had gone fishing in a rocky area in Agios Antonios, Lasithi, between Milatos and Elounda, were faced with an extremely dangerous find. The suspicious metal object they found turned out to be a sea mine!
They located her in a rocky area of the beach and the authorities were immediately notified. Coast Guard forces rushed to the scene, while the prescribed security protocols were activated.
Police sources told APE-MPE that it is a sea mine with a diameter of about 30 cm, which has no obvious signs of oxidation, which raises questions about how long it was in the sea.
Of particular interest are the first estimates that it may be Ukrainian war material, but so far there has been no official confirmation.
The main question that is now being examined is how it was found in the sea area of eastern Crete and whether it is an older military reserve that was swept away or an object linked to newer developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
However, it is not the first similar find on a Greek coast, as about a year ago a similar mine was found on a beach in Rhodes.
