The new life on the island has significantly reduced the family’s monthly expenses,

Leaving the strict daily routine in the United Kingdom and moving to a Greek island proved decisive for a British mother, who says she now lives more economically and with better quality in Lefkada.
Renee Wasik, 43, left Welwyn Garden City in north London behind and moved to Lefkada last November with her husband, Powell, and their two-year-old daughter, Roka. As she describes it, her new life on the island has significantly reduced the family’s monthly expenses, with rent coming to around £430 a month, including bills, while weekly fruit and vegetable costs remain particularly low.
Before moving, the couple were struggling with the high cost of living in the UK, paying around £3,000 a month for housing, while their energy and food bills were constantly rising. The decision to move came unexpectedly, during a holiday in Lefkada, when they spotted a plot of land for sale and spontaneously made an offer to buy.
The family now enjoys a calmer everyday life, with lower costs for basic necessities and cheaper entertainment. A meal with wine at a local restaurant costs around 11 pounds per person, while a beer can cost less than two euros.

She has been particularly impressed by local production, as olive oil is very affordable or even free through friends. As she said:
“Every house here has olives and when you pick your olives, you take them to the factory and they extract the oil for you for something like €1 a liter,” he says, adding: “We spend less and live better, much, much better. It’s not about earning more; it’s about needing less and choosing a different lifestyle.”
