Switzerland is putting its World Cup knockout phase plans into motion tonight. A 4-1 win over Bosnia in Los Angeles on matchday 2 of Group 2 has brought Murat Yakin’s team to the top with 4 points and a goal difference of (5-2) that essentially ensures qualification to the “32”.
The central figures of the match were two players who came on as substitutes in the last 20 minutes, Manzambi and Vargas.
In the 74th minute, Memic made a tragic mistake as he headed the ball into the penalty area instead of clearing it, where Manzambi volleyed it into the net. Less than two minutes after entering the match during the “hydration break”, the 20-year-old Freiburg forward scored a crucial goal.
A little later, in the 80th minute, Muhamerovic tripped the advancing Embolo just before he stepped into the area. A clear case of sending off which the referee immediately indicated. Bosnia with 10 players was now very difficult to react.
In the 86th minute, Vargas received an assist from Embolo and scored 2-0 with a superb shot, while in the 90th minute, Manzambi scored his second personal goal from an assist from Vargas.
Murat Yakin’s two substitutions changed the course of the match and gave their team the victory. In the 3rd minute of injury time, Mamic, who had also come on as a substitute seconds earlier, reduced the score to 3-1, while in the 90+7′, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka scored the final score with a penalty.
