Panathinaikos will face Paksi in the 2nd qualifying round of the Conference League, as revealed by the relevant draw that took place today (17/6) at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The “clover” will play the first game on July 23 on Hungarian soil, while the return match will take place on July 30 at OAKA.
Paksi was founded in 1952, while its colors are green and white. It is based at the “Fehérvári úti Stadion”, with a capacity of 6,150 spectators, while the club’s philosophy is to acquire only Hungarian footballers. In the 2025-26 season, it finished third in the championship, as a result of which it received a “ticket” for the Conference League qualifiers. The team’s coach is György Bognar, who is in his second term at the helm of Paksi. He initially took over from September 2020 to the summer of 2022, while he returned to the helm of Paksi in February 2023.
The team has not won a title in the Hungarian top division, with the second place, in which it finished the 2010-11 and 2023-24 seasons, being the highest it has ever achieved in the “big halls”. On the contrary, Paksi is more… successful in the Cup, as it celebrated the trophy in 2024 and 2025, while it also reached the final in 2022, but was defeated by Ferencváros. The club’s trophy cabinet also boasts a League Cup, which Paksi won in 2011, taking revenge from Debrecen for losing the trophy in the final of the previous competition.
Thanks to its very good performance in the 2010-11 season, Paksi earned a ticket to the Europa League qualifiers. It started in the 1st qualifying round and reached the 3rd, where it was eliminated by Hearts. After winning the Hungarian Cup, it returned to the Europa League qualifiers in the 2024-25 season, where it was eliminated by the Romanian Corvinul in the 1st round, resulting in its “relegation” to the Conference League. There, they overcame the “obstacles” of AEK Larnaca and Mornar, but were eliminated in the playoffs by Mlada Boleslav. Paksi also started their European “journey” last year from the 1st qualifying round of the Europa League, where they were eliminated by the Romanian Cluj, as a result of which they continued in the Conference League qualifiers. They eliminated Maribor in the 2nd round, but the “obstacle” of Polissya in the 3rd round proved… insurmountable.
