Egypt and Iran drew 1-1 in Seattle, in a match for the 3rd and final matchday of the 7th group of the World Cup. After this result, Egypt, which had already effectively secured its qualification to the “32”, finished second in the group behind Belgium and will face Australia in the “knock-outs” in Dallas (3/7, 21:00). For its part, Iran will have to wait to see if it will continue to the “32” of the World Cup.
Egypt opened the scoring in the 5th minute with Mahmoud Saber, while Iran missed a great opportunity to equalize in the 11th minute, as Olympiacos’ Mehdi Taremi took a penalty kick, but failed to “beat” Mostafa Soumbir. Finally, the Iranians equalized in the 14th minute with Ramin Rezaeian, with both teams creating more chances to take the win. The finale of the match was… dramatic, with Taremi heading the ball into the crossbar, while in the third minute of injury time, Shoja Khalilzadeh found his way to the net for Iran, but the goal was canceled after VAR intervention for offside. A little later, Iran had another goal with Ezatollahi, resulting in a 1-1 draw until the end. Thus, Iran remained on three points and now waits to see if they will qualify for the “32” as one of the eight best third-placed teams from all groups.
