The presence of the Greek relay teams at the Balkan Open Athletics Championships held at the Panthessaliko Stadium was absolutely successful, as they won three medals, with the highlight being the gold medal in the women’s 4X100 m relay.
The team of Apostolia Antonatou, Sofia Kamperidou, Rafaela Spanoudaki and Polyniki Emmanouilidou put in a very good performance and, despite the fact that the changes were not entirely perfect, finished first with a time of 44.09, winning the gold medal and climbing to the highest step of the podium.
In the corresponding men’s event, Thodoris Vrontinos, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Sotiris Garaganis and Vasilis Myrianthopoulos won the silver medal with a performance of 39.32, running a steady race and good baton changes.
The mixed 4×400 m team also added a silver medal for Greece, with Kyriakos Tsikilis, Georgia Despollari, Vladimir Andreadis and Rafaelia Giannoulidou finishing in 3:24.18, behind Romania which prevailed with 3:18.58.
With these three medals in the relay races, the Greek delegation completed the first day of the games with a total of 20 medals, of which six gold, eight silver and six bronze.
