Austria combined its return to the World Cup after 28 years with a victory, narrowly defeating Jordan 3-1 in a match for the 10th group of the competition.
The Austrians took the lead in the 20th minute with a stunning shot from Romano Schmidt, but Jordan leveled the match five minutes into the second half when Ali Olwan found space in the area and beat the opposing goalkeeper with a powerful shot.
Ralf Rangnick’s team believed they had regained the lead in the 69th minute through Marko Arnautovic, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for Stefan Posh’s handball in the preceding phase.
Austria finally got their chance in the 76th minute when Yazan Al-Arab inadvertently headed the ball into his own net from a corner kick by Marcel Sabitzer. Arnautovic made it 3-1 in stoppage time with a penalty kick after Salim Obeid’s handball in the area.
