HERAKLION: Heraklion Airport continues to move on a growth trajectory, with international passenger traffic being the main driver of the impressive increase recorded in the first half of 2026.
Heraklion Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” remains on an upward trajectory , with data for June and the first half of 2026 confirming Crete’s potential as one of the country’s strongest tourist destinations.
June showed two different images. On the one hand, domestic arrivals showed a slight decrease, but on the other hand, international passenger traffic strengthened, covering the loss and maintaining a positive overall footprint.
According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority , domestic arrivals in June 2026 amounted to 83,567 passengers, compared to 84,777 in the corresponding month of 2025. The difference translates into 1,210 fewer passengers, i.e. a decrease of 1.43%.
On the contrary, the picture in foreign arrivals was particularly encouraging. In June 2026, 637,914 passengers were recorded, compared to 625,773 in June 2025. The increase amounts to 12,141 passengers or 1.94%, confirming that foreign markets continue to decisively support Crete’s tourism movement.
Germany was the top market serving Heraklion Airport , with 167,726 arrivals. It was followed by the United Kingdom with 111,411 passengers, France with 58,058, Poland with 44,456, the Netherlands with 30,184 and Israel with 27,846 passengers.
The increased pressure of the summer season was also reflected in the daily traffic at the airport. Sunday, June 28, was the busiest day of the month, as 361 aircraft movements took place and a total of 61,749 passengers were handled.
The picture is also positive in the first half of 2026. Domestic arrivals reached 450,460, marking an increase of 5,181 passengers or 1.1% compared to the corresponding period in 2025.
Even more pronounced was the increase in international arrivals, which amounted to 1,466,490 passengers. The increase amounts to 97,206 passengers, a rate of 7%, indicating that international demand for Crete has remained strong since the first half of the year.
In total, 3,473,938 passengers passed through Heraklion Airport from January to June 2026. Compared to the corresponding period in 2025, the increase reaches 206,818 passengers, i.e. 5.95%.
This trend confirms the pivotal role of Heraklion Airport in the tourism development of Crete. “Nikos Kazantzakis” continues to be a key gateway for millions of travelers, with international traffic acting as the main driver of the overall growth.
At the same time, the data also highlights the pressure on the airport’s infrastructure during peak months, as increased passenger traffic requires constant operational readiness. The peak of the summer season is expected to further test the airport’s resilience, while the tourism market appears optimistic about the future.
The slight decline in domestic flights does not seem to affect the overall picture, as it is offset by the steady increase in international arrivals. Based on the data so far, the first half of 2026 creates positive expectations for the course of the year, with Crete maintaining a high position in the choices of visitors from abroad.
