Switzerland has had 26 finals, Qatar just 7, but in football, statistics don’t always count. With a goal from Huji in the 90’+4, Julen Lopetegui’s team secured a historic 1-1 draw with the Swiss, in the second match of Group 2 of the 2026 World Cup.
At San Francisco’s Levi’s Stadium in front of 68,000 spectators, Yakin Murat’s team took an early lead against Embolo, but failed to finish the match with the chances they had and paid for it in the final. The Qataris celebrated what they failed to achieve in the World Cup they hosted on their home soil four years ago, taking their first point in the final phase of the world’s premier football event.
The match started with a quick goal for the Swiss. Freuler was brought down in the 14th minute by Abounanda and Martinez showed the “chalk ball”. Three minutes later, Embolo scored correctly and put Murat’s team ahead.
In the rest of the match, the Swiss tried to score a second goal to get rid of the stress, but they failed. Against Julen Lopetegui’s team that gave everything for the equalizer, and managed to do so in stoppage time with a header by Juhi.
