At the conclusion of the Balkan Open Athletics Championships in Volos, the Greek delegation added two more medals to its tally, closing the event on a positive note.
In the men’s triple jump, Dimitris Tsiamis once again climbed to the podium of the event, winning the bronze medal. The experienced jumper started with 16.15 m. (0.7), had an invalid second attempt that exceeded 16 meters and in his third attempt he scored 16.18 m. (1.3), a performance that secured him third place, without completing the remaining jumps. This is his fifth appearance on the Balkan Championship podium, while the gold medal was won by Turkey’s Can Ozupek with 16.46 m.
In the women’s 5,000 meters, Denisa Balla also won the bronze medal, setting a new record of 16:32.05. Irini Tsoupaki finished in fourth place with 16:53.56, while Turkey’s Endebe Yagiz took first place with 16:17.50.
In the women’s 4x400m relay, the Greek team of Rafaelia Giannoulidou, Ioulianna Roussou, Katerina Grigoriadou and Anastasia Rapti won the silver medal with a time of 3:38.05. In the men’s event, Greece took fourth place with a time of 3:09.88.
Overall, the Greek delegation completed the second day with 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals, reaching 39 medals in total for the event (11 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze). Turkey emerged as the first country in gold medals with 13.
