The Greek women’s pole vault final at the Balkan Outdoor Athletics Championships held at the Panthessaliko Stadium was concluded with a victory for Katerina Stefanidi, with the 2016 Olympic champion winning the gold medal in her first participation in the outdoor event.
The 36-year-old champion, who had first competed with the national team in 2005 at the age of 15 in the Balkan Indoor Athletics Championship, returned to the event after many years and confirmed her class, prevailing with a jump of 4.48 m.
The Greek duel was decided in the details, with Ariadne Adamopoulou also equaling her current record at 4.48 m, however Stefanidi prevailed as she crossed the bar with her first attempt, against her opponent’s third.
In the same event, the two athletes confirmed their good condition, offering high-level competition to the Volos audience.
In the women’s javelin, Elina Gengo took second place with a best throw of 57.88 m, a performance she achieved on her second attempt and was unable to improve on thereafter. First place was taken by Turkey’s Esra Turkmen with a new personal record of 61.10 m.
In the women’s shot put, Eleonora Tsoga recorded the second best performance of her career with 50.04 m, taking seventh place.
