Iran managed to come back from behind twice to draw 2-2 against New Zealand in their opening Group 7 match of the World Cup, in a match with pace and momentum on both sides, which was played amid intense anti-government protests by Iranian fans in Tehran.
New Zealand took the lead in the seventh minute, when Elijah Just fired a one-two from inside the area, following an assist from Chris Wood. Iran equalized in the 32nd minute, with Ramin Rezaian firing the ball into the net from close range, sparking excitement in the packed Los Angeles stadium, where the majority of fans supported the Iranian team.
The excellent Just, 26, a Motherwell winger, gave New Zealand the lead again in the 54th minute, curling the ball over goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, again after an assist from Wood. However, Iran responded ten minutes later, with Mohammad Mohebbi heading in at the far post to make it 2-2.
