The city of Hania is situated to the north-east of the province which bears its name. With a population of over 60,000 inhabitants, Hania is the province’s administrative, commercial and transportation centre. Built in the ruins of the ancient city of Kydonia,  Hania has faced many conquerors throughout the centuries, and the influences of many civilizations are evident throughout the city. Despite modern development and a every-growing tourist industry, this attractive city manages to preserve its original character and maintain its historical ties. Chania is also renown for its rich cultural life, with a host of cultural events organized every year. The city has an international airport and the port of Souda, the largest natural port of the Mediterranean. The Municipal Market is one of the most central spots in the city, hosted in a 1913 building. In a short distance from the centre, there is the Municipal Garden and next to it, the park «Eirinis kai Filias» (meaning, the «park of peace and friendship”. The Municipal Garden is one of the most beautiful in Crete, and it also includes a small zoo. The Venetian port provides pleasant walks through picturesque streets and attracts many visitors throughout the year. There are also many bars and restaurants by the seaside to suit every taste. The districts of the city outside the walls still preserve their Venetian nobility. Narrow passages surrounded by elegant houses built in different historical periods offer visitors pleasant routes to discover. Many neoclassic buildings are also preserved in neighbouring districts, such as in «Halepa». Transportation Transport within the province is good. There is an extended road network, while the port of Souda offers a direct connection with the port of Piraeus. The airport of Hania also offers flights to multiple destinations. The urban buses service the city of Hania from early in the morning until late at night:  From the terminus at the 1866 Plateau, there are buses to Aghious Apostolous, Glaro, Kalamaki (Panorama), Daratso and Galata. From the terminus at the plateau of the Municipal Market, there are buses to the port of Souda, the Venizelos tombs, and the Polytechnic School of Crete.
